Sunshine, Learning, Achievement & More (S.L.A.M.) Program Volunteer Position Description

 

Purpose: The position of Sunshine, Learning Achievement & More (S.L.A.M.) Program Volunteer supports the Learning Disabilities Association of Niagara Region’s summer program for children and youth (ages 6 -10) with learning difficulties and/or AD(H)D. This program is designed to motivate and help children gain confidence and academic success in reading and writing as well as make social skills gains. Children spend half the day on engaging, hands-on literacy and social skills activities and the remaining half on recreational activities, sports  and crafts. It is also designed to help volunteers gain knowledge and experience in working with children who experience difficulties learning essential academic and social skills.

Therefore this position is responsible for assisting in the coordination, safety, delivery, evaluation and supervision of the S.L.A.M. Summer Program.

Job Title: S.L.A.M. Program Volunteer

Location: The S.L.A.M. program is conducted in St. Catharines, Niagara Falls and Welland during the months of July and August 2017.

Key Responsibilities:

The S.L.A.M. Program Volunteer:

  • Assists the program head instructor and other instructors with the delivery of the Summer L.A.M. program;
  • Promotes safety of participants during all the program activities;
  • Motivates and encourage participants in achieving their goals;
  • Takes initiative when assisting staff and interacting with participants;
  • Available from Monday to Friday (full days preferable).

Reports to:                      Program Head Instructor and Program Coordinator

Length of Appointment:

Is available Monday to Friday (full week) from 8:45 a.m. - 4:15 p.m. and can volunteer for any of the following weeks/locations offered (volunteering for multiple weeks welcomed):

 

St. Catharines:

 

  • July 3 - 7, 2017
  • July 10 - 14, 2017
  • July 17 - 21, 2017
  • July 24 – 28, 2017
    • July 31 – August 4, 2017
    • August 14 - 18, 2017
    • August 21 - 15, 2017

 

Niagara Falls:

 

  • July 10 – 14, 2017
  • July 17 – 21, 2017
  • July 24 – 28, 2017

 

 

Welland:

 

  • July 31 – August 4, 2017
  • August 14 - 18, 2017
  • August 21- 25, 2017

 

Mandatory Activities:

 

Mandatory  Activities:

  • Attending training session
  • Responsible for transportation to and from program locations
  • Must fill out time sheets
  • Reporting to Program Head Instructor and Program Coordinator

 

 

Qualifications:               Eligible candidates for the S.L.A.M. Program Volunteer position include individuals over 16 years of age.

  • Passed a criminal check
  • First Aid/CPR is an asset
  • Previous experience working with individuals with learning disabilities an asset
  • Previous experience with recreational camp activities an asset
  • Works well with children and youth
  • Is assertive, responsible, and reliable
  • Has previous experience managing groups of children

 

Skills:                                  Participants  should  demonstrate:

  • Proficiency in English
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Patience, reliability, responsibility, and professionalism

Support  Provided:       Training for this position will take place on Tuesday, June 20th  from 9:00am – 12:30pm (location TBD). In addition, the Program Coordinator and Program Instructors are available on an ongoing basis to answer questions and provide assistance as needed.
